Rúmon is a trickster who uses wit and deceit to attain his goals, preferring to end disputes verbally instead of force. He walks with a slightly drunken swagger and has slurred speech and flailing hand gestures. Many initially believe he suffers from heatstroke, but notes later that Rúmon's actions are often preplanned. His tactics earned an admiring comment from Devlin Ambroise St. James, who asks Commodore James Norrington: "Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?" Rúmon usually prefers the strategies of non-violent negotiations and turning his enemies against each other, although his fighting skills with a sword are not lacking. In actuality, he is an extremely adept swordsman who uses his superior intelligence to his advantage during fights. His swordsmanship is equalled only by Vaden Cort, although Rúmon has been seen numerous times being knocked around by his adversaries. He explains, "Why fight when you can negotiate? All one needs is the proper leverage." He will invoke parley and tempt his enemies away from their murderous intentions, encouraging them to see the bigger picture. Rúmon often uses complex wordplay and vocabulary to confound his enemies, prefering the path of pacifism over violence.
He has created, or at least contributed to, his own reputation. Rúmon is fond of tall tales and embellishing on them, which has many under the impression he has an enormous ego. Despite his many heroics, Rúmon is a pirate and morally ambiguous. When agreeing to trade 100 souls, including ----, to Narflep in exchange for his freedom, the demon asks him whether he can, "condemn an innocent man—a friend—to a lifetime of servitude in your name while you roam free?" After a hesitation Rúmon merrily replies, "Yep! I'm good with it!" He carelessly runs up debts with Devlin St. James, Lady Nightingale, and the other pirate lords. Sao Feng, pirate lord of Singapore, is particularly hateful towards him. He claims to be a man of his word, and expresses surprise that people doubt his truthfulness.
Rúmon claims to have a "tremendous intuitive sense of the female creature", although his conquests are often left with a sour memory of him. Former flames, usually slap him or anyone looking for him. His witty charm easily attracts women, and even has the most proper and loyal questioning their feelings. Rúmon claims his "first and only love is the sea," and describes his ship as representing freedom. Davy Jones’s Locker is represented as a desert, symbolising his personal hell. In the future his sea transforms from insidious waters to a blanket of stars.
Lastly, he has an insatiable thirst for rum, which can confuse his magic compass as to what he wants most. According to vast rumors on his criminal record, he even sacked a shipment of rum to quench his thirst.
Rúmon is one and the same historical Calico Jack. A truth that has caused deep rooted hatred for his brother Stamos, who has stolen his identity (although in true Ravnos spirit). To this day he still flies the Jolly Roger actually designed by Calico Jack, himself. Since Rúmon stole and sunk the similarly named Jolly Mon from Aoifa Malone, he offers her the Interceptor in return for her joining his crew. He is the only pirate willing to bear the "bad luck" of allowing a woman on board (e.g., Lady Nightingale)—let alone in his crew (e.g., the Shuriken, Esmeralda Avalos-Perez and Jolene Le Forte).
Rúmon's catchphrase is an ending question, "Savvy?", in place of the phrase "Get it?"
