Brief History: Liesel was once without words and couldn't read. She understood that there is great power in words, though, and she hungered for them. She began to learn to read with her Papa and visited Frau Hermann in her library, one of the greatest places Liesel had ever seen. She read to those around her in the basement when there are air raids. Books became a source of comfort for herself and for those around her. She loved how words could fill her up, but then she also realized that words can be ugly things, especially in the way Hitler could use words to encourage the German people to carry out horrific acts of violence and cause so much suffering. She realized, too, that these same words were responsible for taking her mother and her brother away, and for Benji's having to hide in the basement. Sometimes, she hated words and wished she could be without them, but she went on to write her own story, hoping that she could find the right words to tell her tale.
