Brief History:
- Johannes was the firstborn and only son born between the union of Kuonrat the Woodcutter and his Romani bride Lyubitshka. He was followed by year later by their secondborn and only daughter Margareta.
- Johannes took after his mother with his dark hair and eyes, but possessed his father's height and arrogant jaw. A quick learner and obedient son. Margareta took after their father with pale blond hair and light eyes, but possessed her mother's slender build.
- Kuonrat was a reasonably good father, if not a bit strict with his family's behavior or stubborn with his verdict that became law in the house.
- Lyubitshka without her husband's knowledge taught her children Romani and gave them their true names. Johannes was referred to Besnick in secret, and his sister was Violca. She also tried to impart secrets of their heritage to them.
- Johannes and Margareta were very close, usually assisted each other with their chores so they could have time to play.
- Lyubitshka died when her children were eight and seven, after a particularly harsh winter -- cold settled in the chest and did not depart until her last breath.
- Johannes helped his father bury Lyubitshka on the bank of a creek behind their house, where she often sat and sew.
- Johannes and Margareta shouldered the full responsibility of the housework, the small garden and animals.
- Kuonrat remarried a few months later, a beautiful young woman named Adelonda. Often the siblings were left for days with their new mother, who was cold and abusive with them. But they had promised their father they would obey her, a fact she took great pleasure in exploiting.
- Adelonda particularly disliked Margareta, as she seemed to get more beautiful with each passing day.
- A mysterious plague fell over the area, resulting in loss of livestock and several villiagers. Supersition gave way to famine.
- Adelonda decided to take the children into the woods and abandon them there so that she and Kuonrat will not starve to death, because the children eat too much. Kuonrat opposed the plan but finally and reluctantly submits to his wife's scheme. They were unaware that in the children's bedroom, Johannes and Margareta had overheard them. They are very sad so after the parents have gone to bed, Johannes snuck out of the house and gathered as many white pebbles as he could, then returned to his room, reassuring his sister that God will not forsake them.
- The next day, the family walked deep into the woods and Johannes laid a trail of white pebbles. After their parents left them, the children waited for the moon to rise before following the pebbles back home. They returned home safely, much to their stepmother's horror. Kuonrat was overjoyed to see his children home, safe and sound.
- Once again provisions become scarce and Adelonda angrily orders her husband to take the children farther into the woods and leave them there to die. Johannes and Margareta attempt to leave the house to gather more pebbles, but find the doors locked and escape impossible.
- The following morning, the family trekked into the woods. Johannes takes a slice of bread and leaves a trail of bread crumbs to follow home. However, after they are once again abandoned, the children find that birds have eaten the crumbs and they are lost in the woods.
- After days of wandering, they follow the smell of fresh baked bread to a clearing in the woods, where they discover a homely cottage with loaves cooling on the sill. Hungry and tired, the children begin to eat the bread, when the door opened. An old hag emerged and lures them inside with the promise of soft beds and delicious food. Unaware that their hostess is a actually a witch and cannibal who waits for travelers in need of shelter to cook and eat them, the children enter the house.
- The following morning the old woman locked Johannes in an iron cage in the garden, and forced Margareta into becoming a slave. The woman force-fed Johannes regularly to fatten him up, but he cleverly offered a bone he found in the cage (presumably a bone from the witch's previous captive) and the woman feels it, thinking it is his finger. Due to her blindness, she is fooled into thinking Johannes is still too thin to eat. After weeks of this, the woman grows impatient and decides to eat Johannes even if he is not fat.
- The woman prepared the oven for Johannes, but decides she is hungry enough to eat Margareta too. She coaxes Margareta to open the oven and prods her to lean over in front of it to see if the fire is hot enough. Sensing the witch's intent, Margareta pretended that she did not understand what she is being told to do. Infuriated, the witch demonstrated and Margareta instantly shoved her into the oven and slammed and bolted the door shut, leaving "The ungodly witch to be burned to ashes", with the witch screaming in pain until she died. Margareta frees Johannes from the cage and the pair discover a chest full of treasure and precious stones the witch kept from her victims. Putting the jewels into their clothing, the children set off for home.
- However, they could not find their way back to the village. Eventually they found a road, which after a day or so brought upon it a traveling band of gypsies. The group was initially uncertain about the pair, but after hearing their tale and discovering that they spoke the same tongue took them in willingly.
- This particular group of gypies made their trade in woodcrafting, metalwork and apothocary. Johannes was eager to learn woodcrafting and metalwork, while Margareta was a natural with herbalism. Both of them learned quickly the Romani history and folktales. Johannes also picked up the habit of pickpocketing.
